Companion

A few weeks ago, a friend said to me (referencing his kids, who are older than my son), “every age is awesome, but there will come a day when they change from this little person that you’re constantly watching, to a companion.” Today was undoubtedly one of the best days of my life (the only thing missing was my husband, who is traveling for work)❤️. What was supposed to be a quick trip to the coffee shop and lunch, turned out to be a spontaneous 7-hour day trip to Newburyport. On perhaps the most gorgeous November day on record. There are so many things in life that pull us away from what’s important. But not today. Today, it was me and my 3 1/2 year old son…and coffee, and lunch, and the candy store, and the bookstore, and the toy store, and a peace rally, and happy dogs everywhere, and more coffee, and a walk along the water, and dinner…and the super moon. A couple times, I found myself trying to get us back to the Jeep to get back home and Finn kept saying, “one more place, Mum…we’re having such a great time.” And just like that, like so many times you’ve allowed me to let go and be present, you did it again, and extended the awesomeness. Because there was nowhere to be, except there with you. I cannot express the pure joy of just talking with you, and holding your hand as we rustled through the leaves, and laughing together, my little companion. I could have never imagined this joy, of being your mum, and of being so loved by you, and so in love with you. Epic lyrics on the way home as you fell asleep…”I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind, that I put down in words…how wonderful life is while you’re in the world.” ❤️️
